The ReYouth Veszprém project mobilized many young people who took advantage of the opportunity to give voice to their ideas and thereby bring about change.

Hangadó - Renewal of Veszprém's Youth Concept

Awarded institution: The Municipality of the City of Veszprém
Project title: Hangadó - Renewal of Veszprém’s Youth Concept

What was the main goal of the project?

The young participants named the project ReYouth Veszprém, highlighting the youth-friendly renewal at its core. Veszprém’s Youth Concept was originally created in 2014, and the Erasmus+ project aimed to update it. At the project events, the results of a recent youth survey were presented to young participants who were then asked to share their opinions on local challenges affecting them and to suggest possible solutions. Numerous workshops were organized where youth professionals and local government decision-makers discussed how Veszprém could become even more youth-friendly.

What activities were implemented within the project?

Approximately 70 local decision-makers (e.g., office managers, municipal representatives, deputy mayors), youth professionals, and over 240 young people participated in 33 events. The Municipality organized the conferences, idea exchanges, and study visits under the professional coordination of the Lélektér Foundation. The youth project management team, comprising approximately ten young people and numerous cooperating organizations, participated in designing and organizing these youth-friendly events. Without them, such a large number of events would not have been possible to realise. During two study visits, the municipalities of Eger and Óbuda presented their good practices to the Veszprém team.

Organizations involved in the project:

What changes has the project brought to the municipality’s life?

During the project, young people and decision-makers discussed youth-related city issues as equal partners, which helped them better understand each other’s mindsets, ideas, and what young people’s needs and opinions are, and what should be implemented. As a result, the city’s Youth Strategy was born from the genuine needs of young people. Furthermore, the relationship with youth and partner organizations has become closer, experience has been gained in preparing new grant applications and meaningful youth involvement, and the number of members in the Youth Roundtable has increased.

How did the project affect you personally?

It was fantastic to see how an idea - inspired by a similar youth participation project in Újbuda - became reality. It was rewarding to carry out this serious commitment in cooperation with several organizations and to gain deeper insight into their situations and goals. The dedication of professionals and the positive feedback, active and creative participation of young people often provided motivation for the next tasks.

What impact did the project have on local youth?

The young people leading the project experienced it as an unforgettable experience. They collected numerous ideas and gained experience in project coordination, presentation skills, and teamwork. Many new acquaintances were formed, and the meetings helped strengthen their team spirit. ReYouth Veszprém mobilized many young people who recognized the opportunity to voice their ideas and bring about change. Inspired by the project, local youth launched their initiative called “Futurum” to bring local opportunities, community building, and conscious lifestyles closer to their peers. Participants also learned about Erasmus+ opportunities, the European Youth Goals, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

What was the most memorable moment?

It’s hard to choose, but perhaps the opening event at Expresszó - the city’s favourite nightlife venue - stands out. The large number of interested people, the many interesting and diverse views and opinions, the uniqueness of the venue, and the fact that the event took place during the day in a place usually lively at night all made it special. Another important moment was when Janka Lakatos - a member of the youth project management team - presented the project and its results at the City Assembly. She felt it was a great achievement that the strategy was unanimously accepted by the representatives regardless of party affiliation, recognizing the work of young people.

Who else, beyond the target group can benefit from the results?

The intervention proposals listed in the new strategy may also be useful for business actors willing to support the city’s youth in achieving their goals. The project targeted young people living, working, or studying in Veszprém and its surroundings, as well as local decision-makers and youth professionals, but we believe the methods and results can be instructive for other cities in Hungary as well.

What are you most proud of regarding the project?

That we managed to activate so many young people together with the partner organizations, and that the youth confidently shared their opinions and creative ideas. The renewed strategy was created with their active participation.

How do you disseminate the project results?

In addition to city and county media, we primarily shared news through the online news portal called 82nullanulla. We also asked participating organizations to share the results within their circles and informed the city’s international partners. The uniqueness of 82nullanulla lies in the fact that its editorial team consists of young people, which perfectly aligns with the theme and goals of the project.

What does winning the Erasmus+ Nívódíj (Excellence Award) mean to you?

It was a joyful surprise and an honour that our project received this recognition from the Tempus Public Foundation, an organization known for its high professional standards. It was a gratifying feeling to share the news with the youth project managers and professional collaborators. The award confirmed that teamwork is worthwhile and that despite challenges, we managed to achieve the goals of the project at a high standard.
