Immigration, integration, xenophobia

About the institution:
The Secondary School of Domžale is an educational institution for 15- to 19-year old students who participate in further education after the obligatory 9-year primary school. Our school provides different educational and training programs for about 600 pupils. It is the only secondary school in Domžale (population of about 12,000).
The pupils who attend the general education program (gymnasium) are offered different topics in the framework of the citizenship education. The topics are: political system, political participation, European political system, immigration and xenophobia. In this regard we organise events such as workshops, lectures and excursions at home and abroad. We collaborate with diverse experts and organisations of civil society such as the youth centre, the university, and with governmental actors (the municipality, representatives of the European Parliament, Slovenian National Assembly, etc.)

About the project:
We would like to submit a project about immigration and dealing with problems of integration, xenophobia etc.

The project is not dealing with the present situations on refugees in Europe in the first place. It has furthermore the aim to awake the public awareness about being a refugee or immigrant decades ago or during the WWII and to involve hard reaching social groups like elderly, school drop outs and immigrants, who live already for a longer time in the country. Through this process we could think more clearly about the present refugees and convey this to our pupils. One good point would also be an involvement of political decision makers, e. g. representatives of the government, MPs or MEPs.

Keywords: Civil Society, Intercultural Dialogue, European Citizenship, Democracy, Active Citizenship, Immigrants, Refugees, Xenophobia.

Role of partners:
We have established links with a youth center, a home for the elderly, the municipality and the city library. We would like to organize few events in our country together with these institutions and expect form our partners to do the same in their local environment.
The institutions we adress are educational institutions and NGO’s which deal manly with older teenagers and focus at least on one of these topics: human rights, immigrants, refugees, youth, education.
Ideally there would be one school form Western Europe, one form Eastern Europe and one non-EU European country (Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia; Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway). A student-teacher exchange is also foreseen.
