Nature Rehabilitation

1. Abstracts from a Danish article in Body + Physics : "Training in open Space; Health promotion, Fun and Effectiveness".

The Orthopedic Rehabilitation Centre in the MarselisborgCentre Rehabilitation Park has for now 10 years had a free choice service for patients in training in the nature after the treatment period and the 4 week individual training period. The participants have different orthopedic and low back diagnosis. The most important criteria for participating ones a week is the desire to train and move in nature. The idea is that the participants latter on should be able to take on the rehabilitation – and the daily living – themselves, eventually lead by a voluntary instructor.

If 9 participants 2 instructors take part, because it is important to individualize the training. Each participant has set concrete goals with importance to them, for instance to become able to take on trousers themselves or manage steps in the house up to a certain level. – The Centre also cooperate with a work consultant enabling the person to return to work, even if he or she is not 100 % restituted. Some employers offer free training time with full wage compensation.

Something very special occurs when training in nature. Science show that nature gives calmness to the brain. The instructors note that in this training it means a lot that nature is a common space, not belonging to a therapeutic room. So the participants a more able to take initiatives , to put up goals, reflect and look on daily life being outside a traditional training hall. The can better se the quality of the movements and the need for them.

This training is positive, useful and secure. The participants have a good social connection with good instructors and they leave the wood in a good humor.

I attach abstracts and scientific results references in English and the headlines for each in Danish are:

- Green surroundings stimulate social relations and social behavior.
- Green surroundings can reduce stress.
- Walking in nature can prohibit depression.
- It can be better to move outdoor than indoor.
- It is better to walk in green surroundings than in city-surroundings.
