The Crocus Project

About the organisation:
Holocaust Education Trust Ireland is an independent non-profit national charity. We aim to educate and inform people about the Holocaust. In so doing, we raise awareness about antisemitism and all forms of racism, and intolerance in Ireland.

HETI provides a range of Holocaust educational programmes for all levels of education as well as programmes for teachers and the general public. HETI coordinates the Certificate in Holocaust Education for teachers and educators in conjunction with the Herzog Centre, Trinity College Dublin which includes study visits to Krakow, Auschwitz Birkenau and Yad Vashem, Jerusalem.

HETI also organises the national Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration in Dublin each year.

Website of the organisation: www.hetireland.org

About the project:
The Crocus Project is an Irish initiative whereby HETI provides yellow Crocus bulbs for young people and school pupils aged 11 years and older to plant in memory of the 1.5 million Jewish children who perished in the Holocaust and thousands of other children who were victims of Nazi atrocities. The yellow flowers recall the yellow Stars of David that Jews were forced to wear under Nazi rule. The Crocus blooms around the end of January, about the time of international Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January).

Participating in The Crocus Project is a tangible way to introduce young people to the subject of the Holocaust and to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and discrimination. The children’s involvement in learning about the Holocaust, planting the bulbs and watching the flowers grow, encourages learning about tolerance and respect. HETI provides a comprehensive Information and Guidelines pack to assist teachers in educating about the Holocaust.

Role of the partner organisation in the project:
We are looking for partner NGOs in Bulgaria, Malta and Romania to co-ordinate the registration of schools and organisations, source and distribute the crocus bulbs and the information booklet and assist with proof reading the translated booklets. HETI will ship the translated booklets to the partner organisation. The partner NGO sends out the promotional letter in Spring prior to commencing the project, inviting schools to register for it. Once the school is registered, the information booklet is sent out with the bulbs in the autumn to all participating schools.

We are searching for partner NGO’s to join The Crocus Project (subject to funding) from Bulgaria, Malta and Romania.
