Local mentorship in higher education and first work experience for youngsters with a migrant background in a European context
ABOUT THE ORGANISATION:
1001 Schakels is a non-profit volunteer organisation for youngsters (12 to 25 years) from the city of Vilvoorde, aiming to achieve an inclusive community. It supports these young people from migrant – mostly Muslim - communities in their school years, in order to improve their academic results and lead to experiences of suc-cess. Our non-profit’s work is based on 3 pillars: aside from education, cultural activities and spiritual devel-opment form the other two pillars that mutually sup-port and uplift our approach. The aim is prevention : by teaching vulnerable young Muslims about universal values and the importance of education, and by organ-izing creative and meaningful activities in their spare time, they become grounded civilians who contribute to society with perspectives for a positive future.
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
We aim to provide guidance for our target group of youngsters with a migrant background once they leave school, and coach them in their first years of higher education and/or mentor them in their jobhunting preparations and experiences. Just like in our existing work in supporting secondary education students, our unique concept of providing a simultaneous crea-tive/cultural programme as well as a spiritual outlet alongside the academic or job coaching, will give these young adults stability and a sense of purpose. In doing so we aim for better integration and participation in our society.
The concept of our local Vilvoorde operation can be applied to other EU cities with a large migrant community and a history of radicalisation risk among Muslims.
Role of the partner organisation in the project:
To adapt the Vilvoorde concept to their own local communities, and to provide feedback and exchange on respective practices in order to strengthen and uplift each other’s best implementation experiences.
